Artists Statement

My passion for animals began early.  At nine years old I drew night after night with pastels, especially the Big Cats.  After attending the Rhode Island School of Design, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1985, I spent many years searching for my artistic voice.  This ultimate direction of Wildlife Art has only begun to blossom in the last few years but has clearly and distinctly become my true inspiration.

With often no more than a quick look, an animal's eyes give me a direct personal connection to its spirit.  Drawing upon the emotion and communication of this fleeting moment, I bring a heartfelt connection to the animal kingdom through art that will engage and intrigue you.

Staying within a realistic style, I pay close attention to detail, using either acrylic or oil paints.  Watching a two-dimensional image come alive as I work creates a sense of timelessness for me, and I often spend from sixty to eighty hours on one creation.

As I work, layering color upon color, I return time and again to the eyes.  The eyes are my inspiration.  They carry me through the painting, watching me, and I notice that my mind, heart, and hand feel as one.
